Travel & Tourism and Event Management (TTEM)

The ever expanding Travel and Events industries employ more than half a million people, bring 7 million visitors to the UK, and make over £36bn each year for the UK economy. So it is hardly surprising that so many young people are keen to get involved.

At the Watford UTC, Year 10’s can chose to take Level 2 BTEC Travel & Tourism, and Year 12’s can chose the Level 3 BTEC Travel & Tourism or Level 3 Travel & Tourism Extended Diploma.

Why chose TTEM at the Watford UTC?

Director Lorraine Davenport’s background has included Thomson Holidays, KLM and Scandinavian Airlines, managing a large travel agency and then owning and running her own catering company. Her expertise has supported our curriculum since its conception.

THEM Students at the Watford UTC get the opportunity to actually run their events and trips, and cater to the public. This involves pitching ideas to the Principal; budgeting and sourcing goods; carrying out risk assessments; and completing every aspect of event or trip management.

Students have previously run prestigious events at the House of Commons and Lord’s Cricket Ground, and planned and executed walking tours of London for our annual visit to London in September. This experience is invaluable to their work for the course, but also an immeasurable boost to students personal skills and confidence.

Within the school building we have our own business cafe, Refresh, and travel agency, Escape. Both have been branded and designed by Watford UTC Students alongside Governor and branding expert, Mo Luthra. The cafe serves as an event space, where students experience catering for businesses holding meetings and receive training on the barista equipment. Escape currently specialises in educational trips planning, please click here for more information.
