Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Certificate in Travel and Tourism

Units are completed as coursework in lessons and during independent study time. Two units in year 10 are assessed via written exam. Please refer to the table below or the BTEC website for more information on the units.

All students will work as part of a team to plan and run an event. They will visit Jury’s Inn Hotel to investigate Customer Services and have the opportunity to visit an overseas destination to explore the local culture and visitor attractions. Students will have an opportunity to work in Escape our travel agency to complete holiday itineraries for a range of different customers. There are a range of opportunities to run events in Refresh, our business café, including pop up restaurants and during lettings to local businesses.

Unit 1: UK Travel and Tourism Sector: Written Exam
understand the UK travel and tourism sector and its importance to the UK economy; know about the industries, and key organisations, within the travel and tourism sector, their roles and interrelationships; understand the role of consumer technology in the travel and tourism sector.
Unit 3: Developments of Travel and Tourism in the UK
explore the developments that have helped shape the UK travel and tourism sector; understand how lifestyle changes and trends have influenced the development of the UK travel and tourism sector; investigate the issues that have impacted on the development of the UK travel and tourism sector.
Unit 2: UK Travel and Tourism Destinations
know UK travel and tourism destinations and gateways; investigate the appeal of UK tourism destinations for different types of visitors; plan UK holidays to meet the needs of different visitors.
Unit 4: International Travel and Tourism Destinations
know the major international travel and tourism destinations and gateways; investigate the appeal of international travel and tourism destinations to different types of visitor; be able to plan international travel to meet the needs of visitors.
Unit 6: The Travel and Tourism Customer Experience
investigate travel and tourism customer service; explore the needs and expectations of different types of customer in the travel and tourism sector; understand the importance of customer service to travel and tourism organisations.
Unit 5: Factors affecting Worldwide Travel and Tourism
investigate how climate, and worldwide time, can affect the appeal of worldwide destinations; understand influential factors on worldwide travel and tourism destinations.
Unit 7: Travel and Tourism Business Environments:
Written Exam

know that there are a variety of types and structures of travel and tourism business organisations and understand how different business functions interrelate; understand the trends in the travel and tourism sector and be able to interpret these; understand why travel and tourism businesses develop new opportunities to grow and change their products/services and the outcomes of these changes on the business.
Unit 10: Organising a travel and tourism study visit
plan a travel and tourism study visit or trip; work with others to deliver a travel and tourism study visit or trip; review a travel and tourism study visit or trip and review own performance.
